- This shows that George is always being mean to Lennie and trying to make sure that Lennie does not get them in trouble.

I was just foolin, Lennie. Cause I want you to stay with me” but George feels an obligation to Lennie because he thinks that he cannot take care of himself. And he is fulfilling the role of a parent taking care of a child where if you leave them alone they will not survive. “If you don’ want me I can go off in the hills an’ fid a cave. I can go any time” Lennie is willing to do anything for George even go off into the wilderness to his possible death just to make George happy.
